Can I highlight my hair when I am pregnant?

My doctor is telling me I have to wait 14 weeks before I can get my hair highlighted. I am 12 weeks now and am wondering if anyone out there has any real info on this...not just an opinion but something their own doctor or some professional has told them. thanks.

My OBGYN gave the ok for highlights since it didn't actually touch the scalp. She said it had to be the kind with the cap to avoid contact with the scalp and to be careful rinsing it out. Also I had to be in a well ventilated area so I had my mom do it on the front porch so it would be all open. I was about 5 months along i think when i did it. My sister also got the ok to do her hair at around 4 months.

My OB said getting my hair hilited by pulling the hair through a cap was fine. I did wait until the 2nd trimester just because I didn't want the smell to make me sick.

I would do what your OB said. You only have to wait two more weeks to use her/his advice.

Get a new doctor; your doctor has made a recommendation and you do not believe him. I do not see you following any of his advice if you want to find contradictory advice so early in your pregnancy.

Your hair will wait. My advice would be to leave any chemicals off your hair until after delivery. If you plan to breast feed you will need to wait longer. This advice is mainly for the safety of your baby.

However, it could also save your hair. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breast feeding can really impact your hair. Many women lose hair by the hands full. Coloring or bleaching your hair now could cause you to lose even more hair.

It is not the safest of ideas to be putting chemicals on or near your skin while you are pregnant. Any chemicals that you come in contact can be dangerous to you and therefore to the baby.

Even inhaling the products can add to the stress on your body which is not healthy for you or your baby.

Congradualtions on your little one, and make the best choices for him or her during your pregnancy.

Yes, it is safe to color or highlight your hair while pregnant. When I was pregnant I did it and another thing when you work around it and you work with color as a cosmetologist nothing happens to the baby. Look at how many cosmetologists work around it every day and their babies are just fine.

I've read from several different sources that it's probably okay to highlight your hair. The dyes don't go deep enough into the skin to enter the bloodstream. However, if your doctor has asked you to wait until the 14th week, I'd just wait until the 14th week. Call me low-maintenance, but my hair can wait 2 weeks if it means putting the baby at less risk. Congrats on the pregnancy! You're almost out of the 1st trimester. The 2nd trimester is SO much better. :)
